Contrary to popular belief, it's acceptable to wear a linen tie plus linen. But ideally, use cotton, or a fiber with less linen, for the shirt. For the tie, if it's 100% linen, it's the perfect fit and should stand out.

Traditional Mode, Conventional, A Classic:

If you wear a guayabera or a Filipino shirt, forget about wearing a tie or tucking it into your pants; that would be blasphemy. However, if you wear a linen shirt without a tie , you can wear it untucked, and tuck it in with a nice belt that matches your shoes, making the look much more formal.

A long-sleeved guayabera is acceptable for formal evening events, and you can wear it with black dress pants even if the event is in town. You can also wear other fabrics like cotton or linen. If it's short-sleeved, it's for casual wear only.

TIP: If you have a linen shirt custom-made (which is ideal), remember that the drape of this fabric, or rather the cut, tends to be looser than dress shirts, so don't even insist on a slim fit cut from the tailor; that's not a good idea.
